What is Bitcoin Mining Cost?

Bitcoin mining cost refers to the expense incurred to produce one Bitcoin through the process of mining. Miners use powerful computers to solve complex mathematical problems, securing the Bitcoin network and earning new Bitcoins as rewards. This cost depends on factors like electricity prices, hardware efficiency, and the network's total hashrate (computing power). Our tracker estimates this cost and compares it to Bitcoin's current market price to help you decide if it's a good time to buy.

Factors Affecting Bitcoin Mining Cost

Several key factors influence the cost of mining Bitcoin. Understanding these can help you interpret the data presented in our tracker:

FAQ

How is the mining cost calculated?

We estimate the mining cost using the network hashrate, an average electricity price of $0.065 per kWh, and an efficiency of 30 watts per terahash. The total daily energy cost is divided by the number of Bitcoins mined per day.

What does "Fair Value" mean?

"Fair Value" means the current Bitcoin price is within 10% of the estimated mining cost. If it’s more than 10% below, we call it "Cheap"; if more than 10% above, "Expensive." The percentage difference is shown to give you a clearer picture.

Why does the price matter?

If Bitcoin’s price is below the mining cost, miners may lose money, potentially signaling an undervalued asset. If it’s above, it might be overvalued. For example, during the 2021 Bitcoin bull run peak (around November 2021), the price reached over $69,000 while mining costs were estimated at $20,000–$25,000, putting it more than 200% above the mining cost. This tracker helps you gauge market conditions like those.

Important Considerations

Remember that this tracker provides an estimated average mining cost. Your actual mining costs may vary significantly based on your specific circumstances. Always consider factors like your electricity rates, hardware efficiency, and mining pool fees. This information should not be used as the sole basis for financial decisions.
